C3.3 R7: Peer review journal article, conference abstract, or award submission

Last week I had the opportunity to peer review a journal article for the Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy. This was a great chance for me to provide a critical review of a therapeutic topic of interest in addition to getting some practice with my critical appraisal skills.  The journal asked reviewers to provide specific feedback on strengths and weaknesses of the article and then provide suggestions for improvement where applicable. The trial in question used a quasi-experimental design so I had to think carefully about confounders and biases that could influence the results. I also tried to focus on what information from the article I would want to know as a clinician before thinking about applying the results to my practice. This was a great exercise and I think being able to have that ‘peer reviewer’ lens will help me when it comes to writing and publishing my own manuscript for my residency research project in the near future. Overall, I think the feedback I provided and the suggestions for improvement that I was able to make will add strength to the published work
